Police said trouble began when Dhinakaran, who was elected from RK Nagar in last year’s by-poll, came to his MLA office. His visit was opposed by few people, who then hurled stones at his car and shouted slogans.
Supporters of Dhinakaran retaliated which led to a clash between the two groups.
A woman police inspector Prema, suffered injuries due to the stone pelting. Attached to Ennore police station, Prema was deputed in Tondiarpet for the bandobast duty in connection with Dhinakaran’s visit. The injured cop was admitted to a private hospital in Aminjikarai.
As the clashes escalated, police resorted to a mild force to disperse the cadre. While shopkeepers in the locality downed their shutters, police pickets were established to bring the situation under control.
Dhinakaran was visiting Tondiarpet, an area which falls under his constituency, around noon for distributing financial assistance to beneficiaries.
It may be recalled that AIADMK’s Madhusudhanan lost to Dhinakaran in the by-poll last year. When contacted, Tondiarpet police told DT Next that no case has been registered and none arrested for the clashes.
