German national attacked on Marina for mobile phone

A 29-year-old German national was grievously injured after he was attacked with wooden logs by an unidentified trio in an attempt to rob his mobile phone, on Marina beach in the wee hours of Saturday.

The victim, H Hao (29), had come to the city for medical reasons and has been staying at a private hotel on Bells Road in Triplicane. Around 3 am, Hao was walking on the sands of Marina behind Kannagi statue when three unidentified men approached and threatened him to part with his mobile phone. 

As Hao refused to relent, they allegedly attacked him with wooden logs. The German national managed to save his phone but lost his expensive sunglass, while the attackers escaped from the spot immediately, police said. Passers-by informed the Anna Square police and sent Hao to Kasturba Gandhi Hospital, where he received five stitches on his head. 

Based on Hao’s complaint, Anna Square police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the trio.

It may be recalled that an Australian woman, Ellis (27), was robbed of her bag at the Marina beach in May. The police have not managed to arrest the suspects till now.

Two women lose chains

In the continuing chain snatching incidents in the city, two women were lost nine sovereigns to bike-borne snatchers in two incidents on Friday. 

Seetha (50) of Kallikuppam near Ambattur was on her way to a temple in her neighbourhood when two men on a bike followed her and snatched her seven-sovereign chain. Even as she shouted for help, the duo fled the spot. Seetha’s husband Moorthy, an employee of Avadi Tank Factory, lodged a complaint at Ambattur police in this regard.

In another incident, this time at Puzhal, an unidentified bike-borne duo snatched two-sovereign chain from a woman who stepped out of the house to dump trash. Based on the complaint from the victim, Saradha (50) of MGR Nagar, police have launched a hunt for the duo. 

Meanwhile, Ice House police have arrested a 21-year-old man for snatching a mobile phone from a pedestrian and are searching for another person involved in the crime. The accused P Sivaraj (21) of Pudupet and his friend snatched the phone of S Sharuk (22) of Royapettah on Friday afternoon. Based on the latter’s complaint, Royapettah police identified Sivaraj as the accused and arrested him. The stolen phone and a two-wheeler were seized from him.
