Three assisting accident victims on ECR mowed down by car

Three persons, including a woman, who were aiding paramedical staff assist accident victims onto the ambulance, were killed after a car, driven by a 17-year-old Class 12 student of Thiruvanmiyur, mowed down the crowd and rammed into the ambulance on East Coast Road, Mahabalipuram, on Sunday. Two others were injured in the incident.

Mangled remains of two cars and the ambulance at the accident spot on Sunday

Police said the ambulance was on the spot as an accident had occurred 10 minutes earlier.  The deceased were identified as R Hemachandra, 26, a private firm employee and resident of Nungambakkam and Ekambaram, 50, of T Nagar. Hemachandra was at a coffee shop with a friend Prem Kumar while Ekambaram, a flower vendor from T Nagar, was waiting for a bus. The identity of the third person, a male, who died later in the Chengalpet hospital is yet to be known.  

It all started when a bike driven by Karthik, 22, of Tiruvottiyur, with pillion rider Kumar, was hit by a car driven by 31-year-old R Rahul, working in a tech firm and resident of T Nagar, from behind as soon as he entered ECR from Mahabalipuram at 5 am. Karthik and Kumar were part of a group of 11 people from Chennai who had been to Mahabalipuram on Saturday. The group was on its way back to Chennai on Sunday morning when the accident happened. 

It was Prem Kumar of Virugambakkam who called the ambulance after witnessing the accident. They were helping the paramedical staff to carry the injured to the ambulance when the speeding car coming from Chennai ploughed through the people and hit the ambulance.  The injured include Prem Kumar and Ajit of Panaiyur. 

Police said that both the drivers have been booked. “Father of the juvenile driver has also been booked while the boy has been sent to juvenile home,” an officer said.
