Bank staffer misbehaves with woman cop, held

A 30-year-old public sector bank employee, who misbehaved with a policewoman in an inebriated condition in Velachery on Sunday night, was thrashed by passers-by and handed over to the Guindy police.

The incident took place around 9.30 pm when the woman constable, attached to the Guindy police station, was returning home after work. 

The accused, Santha Rao, who was passing by the Phoenix Market City while under the influence of alcohol, allegedly touched her inappropriately as she was walking from the opposite direction. Infuriated by his gesture, she slapped him. Passersby, who noticed the incident, surrounded Santha Rao and thrashed him.

Guindy police reached the spot and secured Santha Rao.

During the investigation, police found out that the accused is an employee of Repco Bank and a resident of Lloyds Road in Triplicane.

He was recently transferred to Chennai along with his wife and two children from Ooty, said police. On Sunday, he came to Velachery to meet his friends and the incident happened when he was returning home after consuming alcohol with them, police said. He was booked charges of woman harassment and remanded in judicial custody.
