Pammal municipality consists of 21 wards which includes Pammal, Shankar Nagar, Nagalkeni, Moongileri, Muthamil Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Anna Nagar and Pasum Pon Nagar with a population of nearly 80,000 people.
Residents in these areas claim that the roads in their locality especially the Pammal Nalla Thambi Road, Anna road, Palayapeeriyar Amman Kovil Road, MGR main road and some of the roads in Shankar Nagar are badly maintained due to which several motorists skid and fall off the road.
To add to their woes, mutton and chicken stalls operating in Pallavaram and its surrounding areas, regularly dump their waste on the roadside which leads to bad odour and mushrooming of flies and other insects. Latha, who works on the leather factory in Pammal said, “Every day we need to cover our faces while walking on the roads. Also, because of this the children who are going to school through this way are getting affected by disease.”
Protesting against the menace, the residents formed a human chain for two kilometres a few months ago demanding the municipality to take action. While the municipality officials promised to take action that time, nothing has really changed on the ground, lamented locals.
When contacted the Pammal municipality Commissioner Chandra Jayaraman, said that, “Some people dispose waste at nights. But we will clear them next morning. To stop this permanently we have planned to file complaint to the police and also to cancel the licence of the shops. The roads which have been damaged will also be repaired soon after the metro water work get over,” she added.
