The Abiramapuram police on Monday arrested a serial robbery gang, who were involved in several heists in the locality. The police recovered 62 sovereigns, cash and other valuables from the gang. A car and an autorickshaw were seized as well.
Following several complaints of theft and house break-ins in the locality since June, Mylapore Deputy Commissioner had formed a special team to arrest the offenders. Investigating the case, the police team found that gang burgled a laptop and a Rs 10,000 from L Aravindan’s house in Abiramapuram and damaged the CCTV before fleeing the spot on August 4.
However, CCTV footage recovered from nearby houses showed three men wearing masks escaping from Aravind’s house in the wee hours. A few days later, a vain burglary attempt was reported on Devanathan Street, in which the same gang arrived in a car.
Using these information, the special team matched the identities, traced the four-member gang and arrested them. They were remanded in judicial custody on Monday. While 11 sovereigns were seized from the gang, the remaining jewels were recovered from pawn brokers.
In all, 62.5 sovereigns of gold jewels, a car, an autorickshaw, two kilo of silver articles, Rs 1 lakh in cash, four expensive wrist watches, four mobile phones, two cameras and a laptop were seized from them.
