Chengalpattu-Tiruchy highway to be under automated surveillance

“The project is launched to strengthen safety of roads in part with the other developed countries. The money allocated to improve the safety of roads was raised from Rs 5 crore to Rs 60 crore over the years,” the minister said. 

He addressed the media at a function where 3,980 MTC employees from eight depots were honoured for ensuring road safety and conserving diesel last year.

The minister awarded 3,911 drivers and conductors for adhering to rules and ensured no accidents in the previous year. Moreover, 69 drivers were acknowledged for their contribution in helping the corporation conserve fuel.

The winners, include the technical team, who are attached to eight depots in the city. Triuvanmiyur, Semmencherry, Saidapet, Kundrathur, Iyappanthangal in South zone. In Chennai North zone, Perambur, Thiruvotriyur and Basin Bridge.  

S Mariyappan, a driver attached to Tiruvanmiyur depot who received a cash award and a certificate for conserving diesel, said, “Maintaining buses is a crucial for conserving fuel. I report to the engineers if any difficulty arises at the wheel. They rectify the problem immediately. A good driver applies brakes and accelerator minimally. Also, he knows the road well”.
