The woman was identified as Padma. Her son Bharath was a Class 8 student in a blind school. They both were living with Padma’s mother at St Thomas Mount after Padma’s husband Gopinath separated from them 13 years ago. Her mother died recently, said police.

On Friday night, Padma took Bharath in unconscious state to a nearby hospital and claimed that he attempted suicide by wrapping his face in a plastic cover. Doctors declared him brought dead and sent his body to Chromepet Government General Hospital for post-mortem examination. The results revealed that Bharath was suffocated to death and did not commit suicide.

On suspicion, police interrogated Padma and found that she killed her son as she was unable to take care of him after her mother’s death. Police said that Padma first covered Bharath’s face in a plastic cover and tried to hang self.

“As the rope came off, she tried to kill self by wrapping the cover around her. She changed her mind after sometime and removed the plastic cover from Bharath’s face. As he was unconscious, she rushed him to hospital and claimed that Bharath attempted suicide,” said police.

After an investigation, Padma was produced before Alandur Court on Saturday and remanded in judicial custody.
