Woman saved from suicide bid at airport

Alert fellow passengers and security personnel prevented a woman, the top official of a Coimbatore-based private hospital, from leaping to a certain death from the second floor of city airport’s international terminal on Saturday. Minutes before that, the woman was stopped from boarding a flight due to a medicine overdose, sources said, adding that she is believed to be suffering from depression.

The 37-year-old woman was identified as Kavitha, the Managing Director of a private hospital in Coimbatore. She was reportedly depressed owing to a divorce she went through a few years ago.

She has been undergoing treatment for depression, said police, adding that she frequently travelled to Chennai.

Kavitha, who arrived in Chennai two days ago, stayed in a star hotel in the city. On Saturday, she was scheduled to leave for Coimbatore by an Indigo Airlines flight around 2.30 pm. But when they realised that Kavita was suffering from a medicine overdose, airport authorities stopped her from boarding the flight and cancelled her trip.

Upset over this, Kavitha walked to the international departure and tried to jump from the second floor. The passengers and the security officials who noticed this stopped her.  Sources said she swooned at the spot, and was rushed to Chromepet Government Hospital.
