Procession of Vinayaka idols peaceful
As many as 2,320 idols of Lord Ganesha that were erected in various places across the city and suburbs as part of Vinayakar Chathurthi celebrations were taken in procession and immersed in waterbodies on Sunday. Barring a few incidents, the first-phase of the procession passed off peacefully without any untoward incident.

The Ganesh idols were taken in the routes identified by the police to five immersion points across the city. Giant cranes were installed in the sea front to carry big sized idols. The fishermen extended their helping hand to carry the idols into the sea and also guided people at sea shore.
According to the police, more than 20,000 personnel were deployed on security duty on Sunday.
More policemen were posted in sensitive areas as idols of various colours and sizes, installed by several Hindu outfits, were brought in procession.
The participants went ahead with idol immersion march toward the beach side even as heavy rains lashed the city in the evening.
Hundreds of trucks, carrying the idols, queued up on the roads leading to Srinivasapuram beach on the Bay of Bengal.
On Saturday, 135 idols from various parts of the city were immersed at five immersion points – Foreshore Estate, Neelangari, Kasimedu Fishing Harbour, Tiruvottiyur and Ennore. Later in the evening, 40 people belonging to a Hindu outfit, who tried to take out a march in a prohibited route in Triplicane, were arrested by the police.
