Gold, cash seized from air passengers

Customs officials seized gold worth Rs 25.5 lakh and foreign currencies worth Rs 5 lakh from five passengers in separate incidents at the Chennai airport.

Early morning on Thursday, while checking the baggage of passengers from Bahrain, officials found Karthik (45) from Ariyalur carrying three gold bars weighing 350 gm and worth 10.5 lakh.

Around 8.30 am, officials detained Arokiyam (51) from Chennai who arrived from Kuala Lumpur and found small gold pieces weighing 270 gm worth Rs 9 lakh in his bag. Officials also found Praveen (46) from Sivagangai carrying 185 gram gold worth Rs 6 lakh concealed in key chains. Also, unaccounted Saudi riyals worth Rs.4.6 lakh were seized from two passengers scheduled to fly to Colombo on Thursday.
