A few cars at the rear end of the EMU from Beach derailed when the empty rake was shunted from the station to the shed at Velachery around 11.15 am.

A few EMUs were delayed owing to the derailment, which did not affect passengers as the rake was empty and the incident happened during non-peak hours. Railway officials in the know suspected that the derailment could have happened due to faulty track, probably a fracture in the rail, given that the EMU was being piloted to the shed at low speed.

An official from the divisional headquarters reached Velachery and put the rake back on track and cleared the circuit between the station and shed.
