19-year-old commits suicide two weeks after marriage

The deceased was identified as Durga. She was a college student and wanted to continue her studies. However, her mother Anjalai (39) of Nesapakkam got her married to Rasukutti, a daily wage labourer, of Thendral Nagar in Tirumullaivoyal, despite her refusal.

According to the police, the incident took place when Rasukutti stepped out for work around 6 am on Sunday. When he returned home in the afternoon, the door was locked from within. As there was no response for calls, Rasukutti on suspicion climbed on top of the house and removed the roof. To his shock, he saw Durga hanging from ceiling. 

Rasukutti immediately alerted the police, who recovered the body and sent it to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Durga’s mother Anjalai reportedly told police that Durga was dejected as she got Durga married against her wish. A case has been registered and forwarded to Revenue Divisional Officer for an inquiry.
