Police said that the robbers first entered the ATM attached to the Axis Bank on St Thomas Mount-Poonamallee Road at Ramapuram around 3 pm on the guise of withdrawing money. After ensuring that no one was around, they returned with gas cutters and tried to break open the windows to gain entry into the bank.

But the thieves failed to notice the CCTV cameras pointed in their direction, the footage from which was being uploaded live to the Axis Bank’s main security control centre in Mumbai through the internet protocol television (IPTV) network. The security expert in Mumbai who saw the unusual activity triggered the alarm immediately.

From the bank’s headquarters in Mumbai, officials immediately contacted the police control room in Chennai and alerted them about the unauthorised entry. Following this, police personnel on patrol rushed to the spot. However, the suspects had escaped from the spot by the time they reached there.

Police found out the windows cut with the help of a welding machine. The burglars had also cut the emergency alarm cables at the ATM attached to the bank. A gas cutter and a welding machine was also seized from the spot. Police suspect that the burglars might have cut alarm cables after it went off and escaped, said police.

The Royala Nagar police have registered a case and collected CCTV footage to ascertain the identity of the suspects. Sources said that the CCTV footage showed entering the ATM kiosk, with their faces with clothes.

Police suspect that the burglars should have monitored the bank before attempting the loot, and are questioning the employees of the branch to find out if any of them were involved in the crime. It looked like a planned attempt with the knowledge about the functioning of the bank, said police.
