Under this, Class 9 students from government and other schools located in villages would be selected based on their marks in science subjects. In the first phase, 20 districts have been included under the programme.

A senior official from the council told DT Next that qualified faculty members from the universities or colleges in the State would offer special training to students on science subjects during their post-examinations holidays. Through this scheme, students who have potential in science would be given exposure in the field of science and research, he added.

As per the schedule, students would be given theoretical instructions during morning sessions, while the afternoon sessions are meant for practical work. Towards the end of the programme, the students would be divided into groups, and would have to work on special science and technology projects in different disciplines.

Students are also encouraged to make models and do experiments when they are back in their schools. “They can be guided by a mentor to pursue a scientific career. An exhibition of the models made by the students during this period will be showcased at the valedictory function of the programme,” the official added.

The training centres for the programme would be set up in all 20 districts. “A committee comprising experts in science has been constituted to select the candidates,” the official said. He added that the council would spend Rs 30 lakh for this programme.
