Deepavali ‘gift’: Cash seized from top officials

DVAC sleuths raided the office of the Director of Boilers in Ezhilagam and the Commissionerate of Labour in DMS complex at Teynampet after complaints of corruption in these two offices. Another team of DVAC officials raided the office of sub-registrar office, Chengalpattu. Officials indicated that the raids were aimed at unearthing Deepavali bribes.

The DVAC city detachment cell and district inspection cell officers conducted the joint surprise check at the office of the Director of the Boilers and Deputy Director of Boilers between 4 pm and 8 pm on Tuesday. For any commercial use of boilers – be it industrial purpose or for hotels – it is mandatory to obtain permission from these offices, an official noted.

“During the check at their offices unaccounted Rs 3.5 lakh was seized. Though not many know about the existence of an office for boilers, it looks like they have been silently collecting bribe,” a senior DVAC official noted. The official added that there would be such raids at offices which are not known among the public. In many of these offices, officials have been busy collecting their ‘Deepavali special’ gifts, he added. “The raid on the Commissionerate of Labour is currently on,” said a DVAC official. In the raid, Rs 15,000 was seized from an assistant of a JointCommissioner.

Meanwhile, a team from Chennai carried out raids on the integrated sub registrar office in Chengalpattu in which Rs 2.87 lakh was seized.
