After the hospital authorities informed the police, investigators managed to track the woman and hand over the boy back to her. The woman Rathi (name changed), complained of severe stomach ache and reportedly reached the hospital in Saurashtra Nagar with an elderly woman and other lawyer friends well past midnight and the medical staff present there administered a pain killer injection on Rathi.

The woman later went to the restroom on the ground floor and after she failed to emerge, the elderly woman went looking for her. Later, both walked out of the bathroom and left the hospital. At 4.30 am, staff heard a baby’s cries from the rest room and alerted the hospital executives as well as the police.

A team from the Choolaimedu police station scanned the CCTV footage and identified her. “She had given her name and address at the hospital and even people in the locality knew her. We traced the woman and conducted inquiries when she accepted that it was she who abandoned the child. She took the boy back, promising to care for him,” an officer said.

The woman reportedly got pregnant before marriage and was unsure of what to do with the baby. Hence, she attempted to abandon the newborn, police said.

She lived with her mother, brother and sister-in-law. It is not clear if the family members knew of the pregnancy. They had reportedly consulted doctors after she missed her periods while she kept complaining of stomach ache.
