Bar woos tipplers with Deepavali ‘offer’ to drink up, 2 held
With traders who own textile outlets to even sweet shops announcing festival discounts and other offers to attract shoppers in the Deepavali season, a private bar’s ‘offer’ to lure customers with household appliances such as LED televisions and washing machines has raised eyebrows among police officers here.

Cracking down, police registered a case and arrested two persons from the bar, which is owned by a former AIADMK councillor.
Passers-by on Triplicane High Road and Vallaba Agraharam were recently surprised to notice banners announcing a rather unique offer: Those who consume liquor for more than Rs 1,000 at the bar would be eligible for a lucky draw, standing a chance to win electrical appliances worth Rs 25,000.
The prizes for consuming liquor at the bar included 32-inch LED TV, washing machine and refrigerator.
Pamphlets, too, were distributed to pedestrians and motorists who passed through the locality on the offer to tank up. The bar is owned by SMK Mohammed Ali Jinnah, former AIADMK
councillor and district secretary of the party’s minority wing.
After the attention of the police was drawn to the ‘offer’, the Zam Bazaar police registered a case under Section 24 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act (violating licencing norms) as well as Section 353 (preventing government official from discharging duty) of the Indian Penal Code.
Manager of the bar, W Vincent Raj (25) of Madhavaram, and Jinnah’s personal assistant J Riyaz Ahmed (41) of Royapettah, have been arrested.
Police said they also seized some electrical appliances from the bar.
Mohammed Ali Jinnah also has been booked in the case but not arrested yet, they added.
