The suspects were identified as M Arunagiri (45) of Pudupet and K Saranya (29) of Adyar. Police said Saranya was in a relationship with the victim J Govindhammal’s son Sakthivel, a taxi operator, and decided to take revenge on him as he broke off the relationship with her to marry a girl of his mother’s choice.
Police said that Sakthivel met Saranya, who runs a business of supplying water cans, three years ago when he regularly parked his car near her house in Adyar and they developed a relationship. However, he ended the relationship recently, reported following his mother’s advice.
Infuriated over this, Saranya hired autorickshaw driver Arunagiri and a few others to take revenge on Sakthivel. On November 10, a group of men entered Govindhammal’s house disguised as insurance agents and threatened her at knifepoint before escaping with Rs 4 lakh.
Based on Govindhammal’s complaint, the Tiruvanmiyur police registered a case and secured Arunagiri with the help of CCTV footage. With his inputs, Saranya was also arrested. An autorickshaw and a two-wheeler were seized from them, and a hunt has been launched for three more suspects. Two of them have been identified as Prem and Sathishkumar. Police said that the same gang stole Sakthivel’s car a few days ago before committing robbery at the house and sold it in Thanjavur.
