A lawyer whose foresight educated many women

Vellore Lakshmanaswamy Ethiraj, an Indian lawyer and philanthropist, founded Ethiraj College for Women in 1948.

He was the first Indian to be appointed as Crown Prosecutor by the British Raj. He received his undergraduate degree from Presidency College, Chennai and received his law degree from the University of Dublin. 

The formative years witnessed a strong foundation through the introduction of undergraduate courses in Economics, Botany, Chemistry, History, Zoology and English Literature along with the infrastructural facilities, resulting in the construction of the Science Block, Hostel, Open Air Theatre and the Old Library Block.
