“Immediately after the completion of MRTS phase-2 in 2007, we decided to develop commercial spaces at Velachery station.

The feasibility report did not work out in favour of the project as Velachery was still an upcoming area then. After a few years, we again studied the feasibility but in vain,” a CMDA official said.

“But now, since Velachery has become a major commercial and residential area, we have planned to revive the process of utilising vacant space effectively,” the official added.

The 11.16 km MRTS phase-2 line has nine stations-Mandaiveli, Greenways Road, Kotturpuram, Kasthuriba Nagar, Indira Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Taramani, Perungudi and Velachery.

“The CMDA has the right for the development of vacant space above the railway stations or the land adjoining the stations for commercial exploitation,” the official explained.

Velachery MRTS station would have four floors for exploitation extending up to 2.54 lakh sqft.
