According to the residents of the area, the construction which has been in full swing for the last one and a half months has not only been causing inconvenience as it continues till late night but also has been impacting the greenery.

Talking to DT Next, T Venkatesh, a resident of a gated community nearby said, “The corporate house is reconstructing the guest house. We understand it is going to be a one-storey building. Since the beginning of the reconstruction, they have not bothered to follow rules or made any attempt to preserve the beauty of the beach.”

Even as the Greater Chennai Corporation has recently announced it would take strict action against anyone dumping construction material on the road, following a biker’s death who skidded on a pile of sludge last month, the party in question has been unfazed, he said. “They dump everything from cement to iron roads on the road nearby. The road is a dead end but is used mainly by the residents living in the area. It causes a lot of problems to us when we have to reach our apartments, though there are not many heavy vehicles using the stretch.”

Residents pointed out that the beach is a clean stretch and that the builder’s contempt for rules and regulations is unsettling. “We have been ensuring it is pristine and there are a number of dustbins placed on the beach for the garbage. But the construction mess has spoiled it all in a matter of few days,” he said.

A senior Corporation official from Zone 13 said that the issue would be investigated, making note of the complaints and points raised by the residents. “We will personally survey the area to see if rules are being flouted. If that is the case, we will take speedy action,” added the official.
