Talking to DT Next, Jay Thattai, founder of the NGO Wake Up Creations said, “We have been hearing a lot about the attacks on women and have been expressing outrage over it. These incidents happen here in India and also abroad in countries like London. The Nirbhaya case or the Nungambakkam Railway Station incident had created a lot of uproar in our society, but we often don’t do much beyond just expressing outrage.”

Choosing to do something more, the NGO team had researched and read up Bharathiyar’s works. Jay added, “Especially the Puthiya Aathichudi had a lot about how the scenario was going to change in 100 years, how the men are going to be reporting to them as their subordinates and about how they should chin up.”

The dance drama combines Bharathanatyam with the message and with live demonstrations of the techniques and is also a step towards making women take up the defence technique as a profession.

“We thought anything dramatic always send a strong message across in Indian society. We chose Krav Maga because those training in it would only need 10 hours of sessions to know how to safeguard themselves. It is that simple recipe for safety. We are also looking at ways to support those who want to make a career out of it-part time or fulltime, by conducting classes in schools, colleges or corporates,” he added.
