The residents of Survatheerta Kulam tank, Hiderpet, Reddipettai, Koiyakulam Street, Vijayakami Street are put to difficulty due to the malfunctioning of street lights for more than three months.
Kumarasammy, a local resident, claimed that they have taken up this issue with the municipality officials on several occasions, but the street lights are never maintained. “Due to the malfunctioning streetlights, anti-social elements use the darkness to indulge in several illegal activities,” he said.
Apart from streetlights, the locals claimed that public water taps were broken in many areas and were not being replaced regularly. As a result, they said that they are forced to purchase drinking water despite paying water tax. “Not just these issues, the municipality has been slacking in clearing garbage too. Basically, the work done by the municipality is completely unsatisfactory,” said another resident of Reddipettai on condition of anonymity.
When contacted the Kancheepuram Municipal Commissioner Marimaran said that there are totally 11,000 street lights in the municipality which are maintained on a contract basis. “We have received the complaints and will be replacing the streetlights soon,” he said. As far as garbage collection was concerned, the commissioner said that the problem lay with the residents who fail to segregate their garbage regularly creating a difficulty while processing.
