Including this shocking case, there were at least three murders reported in the city from Sunday night to Monday morning.

At around 10.40 am, Kumaresan of Choolaimedu was returning home on his bike after appearing before Poonamallee court in connection with a murder case.

The gang intercepted him near the DG Vaishnav College and when Kumaresan tried to flee, they chased and hacked him. Such was the attack that panic-stricken passers-by ran away from the spot fearing for their own safety.

Finally, it was the Arumbakkam police who took Kumaresan to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police said Kumaresan had a few cases pending against him, and added that he could have been murdered over ganja peddling dispute. One of the suspects, Sagayam, was secured, and special teams have been formed to nab the other two, ‘Pambu’ Vinoth and Bharath.

A woman, her daughter and son-in-law were arrested after her 70-year-old husband was murdered on Sunday night in Mogappair.

Yesurajan of Collector Nagar I Street, who was running a lathe workshop, has been living on the first-floor of his house, while his daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Francis were staying on the ground floor.

After his wife Kala separated from him a few years ago, his son Arulraj was taking care of him. Police said Kala, Jennifer and Francis feared that Yesurajan might give all the assets to Arulraj.

On Sunday night, the trio, along with a relative identified as Gopal, quarrelled with him over this. Kala and others left after a while, but Gopal stayed with Yesurajan.

Later at 11.30 pm, he was found dead with injuries on his neck and abdomen. After preliminary inquiry, the Nolambur police arrested the trio for being involved in the murder. A hunt has been launched for absconding Gopal.
