The incident happened on Monday at Sharma Nagar in Vyasarpadi, and about 15 youngsters were seen sitting on top of an MTC bus (route No 57 plying between Red Hills and Broadway), shouting slogans in the guise of celebrating bus day as well as Samathuva Pongal (Community Pongal). On information, the MKB Nagar police initially secured them and let them off with a warning.
However, after the photos of the students atop the bus went viral, a case was registered as per the instructions of senior officers and a hunt was launched for them. After investigation, Abdul Khayum (19), who had already been arrested in connection with a clash between students over bus routes, was secured initially. Based on his inputs, Mohankumar (18), Santhoshkumar (20), Naveen (19), Praveen (19) and Irfan Basha (18) were also arrested. They were booked under four different sections of the IPC and remanded in judicial custody. A hunt has been launched for Hariharan, Suresh, Ajith, Siva and Vignesh.
In August last year, visuals of a group of unruly teenagers wielding long knives while travelling footboard on an MTC bus went viral. Following this, the police arrested a city college student, and detained eight others. After incidents of students creating nuisance in MTC buses increased, the senior police officials also held a meeting with the college managements in the city last year.
