There are nearly 200 roadside shops that encroached the space belonging to the Kancheepuram central bus stand. Due to this, the bus crew were finding it difficult to enter and exit the terminus, leading to frequent traffic snarls. Kancheepuram Collector P Ponniah who visited the spot last month ordered the municipality officials to remove the encroachments. Following this, the civic authorities issued notices to shopkeepers two weeks ago asking them to vacate the place.

On Thursday morning, the officials removed some of the shops with the help of an earth mover. The shop keepers protested the eviction drive and sought additional time to vacate the place. A police team rushed to the spot, held talks with them and instructed them that the shops encroaching the space should be vacated by Friday. The municipality officials demolished nearly 40 shops and the remaining shops will be demolished on Friday.
