The incident took place at Shakundala’s located on 10th avenue around 5.30 pm on Monday. Four women and a man, who reached the shop, reportedly claimed that they needed to buy sarees for their daughter’s wedding and asked the woman staff member to show them different varieties.

“While the women were checking the sarees, the man diverted my attention by asking change for Rs 2,000,” said Gopal, the  shop owner. CCTV footage showed the man talking to Gopal who was at the cash counter. Meanwhile, a woman blocked the view of the staff member by spreading a saree on her shoulder and another woman took the sarees and hid them inside a bag. In a similar manner, the  women took turns and stole a bunch of sarees. They selected two sarees and told that they would bring the bride-tobe to buy them.

When the employee was keeping the sarees back on the rack, she realised that 16 sarees were missing and alerted Gopal. He rushed out to find the women, but in vain. Based on his complaint, the Ashok Nagar police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for the gang. The police said that they have received information that a gang from Hyderabad has been indulging in such crimes and added that they would be nabbed soon.
