Based on a tip-off from the Intelligence Bureau, a police team from West Bengal reached the city on Tuesday morning and arrested two men, identified as Hasan from Neelankarai and Mallik from Ambattur. They mingled with construction workers from other states working in Vettuvankeni, said sources.
The two men were arrested for circulating counterfeit currency and possessing country made guns in West Bengal and released on bail three months ago. They came to Chennai to escape from police in that state. After the court issued a warrant recall against them, the West Bengal police traced them to the city.
While they were not involved in any cases in Chennai, the police are investigating if they supplied guns to anyone here.
Three men in connection with a skimming racket were arrested by the Kolkata police in Triplicane on Sunday. The Haryana police secured two murder accused from Madhavaram on Monday.
Man defaulting car loan threatens financiers with airgun, held
A 52-year-old man, who allegedly threatened three employees of a private finance firm with an airgun when they came to his house to collect loan dues, was arrested by the Tirumangalam police. The man who got the loan to buy a luxury car failed to pay the monthly loan amount for the last five months. The accused has been identified as Gangavarajan, a resident of H Block in Anna Nagar. He runs an LPG agency on Ambattur-Oragadam Road. The police said that he bought a BMW car using a loan from a private finance firm. However, he failed to pay the dues for the last five months to the tune of Rs 5 lakh. He was sent several reminders but in vain, said sources. “On Monday, three employees of the firm went to his house and warned him to pay the dues. Infuriated over the development, Gangavarajan allegedly threatened them with a gun. Panicked, the employees left the premises and informed their superior,” said the police. Based on a complaint filed by Murugan, manager of the financing firm, the Tirumangalam police registered a case and secured Gangavarajan. He was booked under the Arms Act and remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.
