Central Station gets fresh coat, 100-foot tricolour

The first monumental National Flag in Chennai Division of Southern Railway was hoisted at the Central Railway Station on Friday.

Southern Railway General Manager RK Kulshrestha in the presence of Railway officials and staff members hoisted the 100-foot high flag at the entrance of the station. 


As per the orders of the Railway Ministry, the monumental flags would be hoisted at 75 major stations of Indian Railways.  


In Southern Railway, the flags have been provided at Coimbatore, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam South and Kozhikode.  


At both Chennai Egmore and Thrissur, such flags would be hoisted soon, a Railway release here said.


In addition to these Railway stations, the monumental flag has been provided at Signal and Telecommunication Workshop at Podanur.


Speaking to reporters, Kulshrestha said about 704.5 million passengers have travelled from April 2018 to January 2019 which was four per cent higher than the corresponding period of 2017-18.


On the freight front, the SR has registered an originating freight loading of 29.91 million tonnes during the financial year 2018-19 up to January, 2019, witnessing a growth of 26 per cent compared to the corresponding period of 2017-18 (23.71 MT).  


The flag was hoisted in a 100 feet tall pole made of two tonnes of Galvanized Iron Pipes telescoped into one another to form the pole. The flag cloth was made of polyester. 


The cost of the flag, measuring 30x20 ft, pole and the installation was Rs 15 lakh. It could be operated both manually and as well as usingelectrical power.
