On Friday, residents of Moorvarasanpet Nagar and Ullaipali Nagar said stray dogs in their neighbourhood were being poisoned by unknown persons. There were four dogs found dead on the street on Wednesday, which took the total number of dead animals to 15 in just a week.

The residents said they tried to file a complaint at the Palavanthangal police station but the personnel there initially refused to receive the complaint and asked them to file a complaint with the Blue Cross. Later, after senior officers intervened, the Pazhavanthagal police registered a case.

The carcasses were sent for post-mortem examination at government veterinary hospital in Vepery.

After the residents raised suspicion that those who reared goats in their houses could have poisoned the dogs, police are conducting inquiries with them. Some of the residents also fear that it might be the handiwork of robbers who are planning to target the houses in the locality. What has raised this suspicion is that the streets where the dogs were found dead were the ones where crimes like chain-snatching and house break-ins were reported often.

It may be recalled that 12 dogs were found dead in streets of Jerusalem Nagar, TTK Nagar, and Malika Nagar in Tambaram in the last two days. The residents used to feed these street dogs regularly as they were safeguarding the locality from those from outside.

Police at Pazhavanthangal and the Tambaram have registered cases and are investigating the incidents. Animal rights organisation Blue Cross is also conducting inquiries, sources said.
