The arrested man was identified as R Karthik (31), of M Savereyor Puram in Thoothukudi.

Based on a tip off, NIB deputy SP Purushothaman and team nabbed the suspect from the Koyambedu bus terminal. The NIB-CID team produced him before a magistrate court in the city, which remanded him prison. The officials are questioning him to find details of his network and seized his mobile to trace his associates. “This was his first attempt to smuggle ganja from Visakhapatnam. But he was caught before he could take it to his native,” a NIB officer noted.

Karthik was working in construction industry. But after he had jaundice, he found it very hard to work in the sun. So, he decided to try the new profession only to get caught by the police on the ‘debut’ itself. Police noted that he had procured the contraband at Rs 5,000 per kg, which was to be sold at Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 per kg at his native. NIB has so far registered 21 cases this year.
