According to police, Lakshmi, a 26-year-old woman constable attached to the 4th Battalion of the Armed Reserve Police was passing by the Tiruvallur Combined Court Complex on Tuesday when she was allegedly harassed by a group of lawyers. They targeted her despite knowing that she was a police constable, police said.

“The group at the court complex asked the constable to give them Rs 50. When she refused money, they began harassing her. They did this despite knowing that she was a police constable. One of the group members was Dennis (36), an advocate from Tiruvallur town,” said a police official.

Witnessing this, Karthik (32), another police officer, intervened to save her from Dennis and other lawyers. When Karthik confronted them, they turned their attention to him. Police sources said the advocates joined together to allegedly assault Karthik before running away from the spot. “The five-member gang even threatened to kill Karthik,” the officer said.

Based on a complaint Lakshmi filed with the Tiruvallur town police, CCTV camera footages were checked. Following this, Dennis was identified and arrested. He was remanded in judicial custody, while a hunt is on for the other four accused.
