The victim, Fathima (29), suffered minor injuries in the attack and was treated at Government Peripheral Hospital at Periyar Nagar. Her husband, Mohammed Batsha, works in the Avadi Tank Factory, the police said.

The couple from Teeds Garden in Perambur have been married for nine years and have two children. They often quarrelled as Mohammed Batsha allegedly suspected Fathima of infidelity. Three days ago, Fathima lodged a complaint against her husband at Peravallur all-women police station accusing him of domestic abuse. While a case was registered for further investigation, the couple allegedly decided to apply for divorce.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, a quarrel erupted between them again and Mohammed Batsha took the bottle of disinfectant from the toilet and poured it on Fathima. Hearing her cries, neighbours intervened.

Based on a complaint, the police arrested Mohammed Batsha and remanded him in judicial custody.
