196 kg plastics seized from Tasmac shops

Three days after the Greater Chennai Corporation directed its officials to tighten the action against the use of banned plastic items, zonal level officials conducted raids in several Tasmac bars in the city, on Sunday.

According to a Chennai Corporation official, as many as 305 Tasmac bars were raided and more than 904 kilograms of banned plastic items were seized.


“Of the total banned plastics seized, as much as 137 kilogram were seized from 35 Tasmac bars in Anna Nagar zone, which is the highest. Officials also seized 128 kilogram from Kodambakkam,” the official said.


Around 113 kilogram and 100 kilogram of plastic items were seized from Manali and Ambattur respectively. The data also suggests that the rampant use of banned plastic items in extended zones. As per the data, 477 kilogram of plastic, which is more than half the quantity of total seizure, was seized from Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones. However, the officials have raided only 121 Tasmac bars in these zones.


“We concentrated our raid at the Tasmac bars as they are still selling plastic cups to serve liquor. Apart from Tasmac bars, we have also seized a substantial amount of banned plastic items from supermarkets,” the official added.
