The incident occurred when Mohan Lal Jewellery in Kancheepuram received a phone call on Monday evening from a caller who identified himself as Srinivasan, a doctor working in a private hospital in Ulagalandha Perumal Koil Sannidhi Street in Kancheepuram.
According to the police, the caller asked Mohan Lal to deliver three gold chains, totally worth for nearly Rs 2 lakh, promising that he would pay for it at the time of delivery. He had told that he could not come to the shop directly as he had a tight schedule in the clinic.
Following that, Mohan Lal gave three gold chains worth Rs 2 Lakh to his son Dinesh and asked him to deliver it at the clinic.
When Dinesh went to the hospital, a man in his mid-thirties received him and said that the doctor was busy in the ward and hence he would take the gold chains and show them to him later. He asked Dinesh to wait in the reception.
When he failed to return even after a long time, Dinesh on suspicion went and enquired in the reception. That was when he realised that he was cheated.
Police said that the doctor has not booked any gold chain and someone had used his name to con the jewellery shop owner.
Dinesh later filed acomplaint at the Siva Kanchi police station.
