On Thursday evening, Priya (26), Shankarammal (28) and Abirami (25) from Nagercoil boarded an overcrowded bus to Poonamallee.
When nearing Pammal, they tried to steal a 3-sovereign chain from Sasikala, another passenger. When Sasikala raised an alarm, the women also joined her and shouted for help, which got the other commuters confused. However, Sasikala maintained that the three were trying to snatch her chain.
The driver took the bus to the police outpost at Pammal, from where the personnel took them to Shankar Nagar police station. During the inquiry, police grew suspicious that the trio were not Muslims despite wearing burqa.
After preliminary inquiry, police found that they had come to Chennai a few months ago in search of employment, and turned to crime after failing to find jobs.
They confessed they tried targeting male passengers initially, but found it was not easy and turned to the women. Police recovered the gold chain and said they are suspected to have snatched many gold chains in Chennai.
The women were arrested, and the police in Nagercoil have been informed about the case so as to verify their addresses.
