The decision was taken onMonday following the expected visit of deputy election commissioner Sandeep Saxena to Chennai on May 15.
“The deputy election commissioner would hold a meeting with district collectors at a private hotel in Guindy. Due to the distance factor, it has been decided to set up the model counting centre at the University,” a Chennai Corporation official said.
Votes polled in South Chennai Lok Sabha constituency will be counted at Anna University. The model counting centre would have seating, safety and other facilities similar to the actual counting centres.
The official added that the polling officials participating at the meeting could visit the model counting centre to get training on the counting process.
The model counting centre is planned for the first timeafter the ECI directed all the States to set up one.
