The victim, Karthik (25) of Tiruvanmiyur, a private firm employee and trekker, came to Kanathur beach to meet his friend Yashwanth from Coimbatore. While they were talking, sub-inspector Balasubramanian and a constable intercepted them.

Even after the duo showed their identity cards, the policemen threatened and demanded them to pay Rs 5,000 to let them off. The SI further said that they would land in trouble if both of them were taken to the police station. Frightened by the threats, they handed over Rs 2,000 and left the scene, said sources.

On learning about the incident, senior officers ordered an inquiry into the incident. As the allegations against the police personnel were true, they were asked to report to the Armed Reserve Wing.

A senior officer told DT Next that the incident is true and disciplinary action will be initiated against them. “For now, they have been asked to report to the Armed Reserve wing,” said the officer.
