According to the protestors, many private parties indulged in ground water tapping across the Minjur area particularly in government lands through bore wells, especially in Vichur village resulting in a drastic dip in ground water.
Protestors claimed that the rainfall since 2015 was not up to the desired level and the villagers were struggling for drinking water during summer season. “Even the Kosathalaiyar River has been dry for a long time now,” said a protestor who claimed that despite the water crisis, private persons were allowed to extract and sell water. “We have filed several complaints against this with the panchayat officials but no action has been taken,” he said. More than 200 people participated in the protest. Tha Manali police along with the revenue department officials rushed to the village and convinced the protestors and assured that the action will be taken and the supply of drinking to the villages will be resumed.
Additional tahsildar for Ponneri, Sankalirathi, said that the matter will be taken up with the higher officials and will be solved soon. Based on the assurance, the protestors disposed.
