The accused, Sumathi (35) of Teynampet, went to a shop at Choolaipallam and asked the staff member to show different designs of necklaces. When the employee was taking the jewels from the rack, she took one of the necklaces and hid it in her blouse. After Sumathi left, the employee realised that a two-sovereign necklace was missing. He checked the CCTV footage and found out that Sumathi stole it. Then, a police complaint was lodged and the CCTV footage was sent to various police stations. On Sunday morning, a police constable found the woman walking near KK Nagar and identified her.

When he confronted her, she started shouting. Later, a policewoman frisked Sumathi and recovered the necklace. She was arrested and remanded in judicial custody on Sunday. Sumathi reportedly told the police that she had debts and as she was unable to settle them, she decided to steal.
