A senior official from Chennai Corporation said that the project has been implemented near Teynampet Metro station on a trial basis. “Two vendors have installed their devices to monitor streetlights through smartphones. Depending upon the results of the trial, we will implement the new system across the city,” the official added.

The new technology links pillar boxes to exclusive applications installed in officials’ smartphones. As of now, 30 streetlights on Anna Salai have been linked to the app. Normally, one pillar box would control around 40 to 50 streetlights.

“Engineers of the concerned wards will be given rights to use the smartphone application so that they could switch on and off streetlights in their respective wards. Meanwhile, higher officials could monitor the functioning of lights. We will receive dashboard alerts in our smartphones if any light malfunctions,” the official said.

Explaining the technology, the official added that the web-based sensors in the pillar boxes have been connected to the smartphones. After touching the button in the app, sensors-driven triggers either switches on the lights orturns it off.

The app can also help the civic body to dim the lights depending upon the available natural light, thus saving electricity.

The civic body is maintaining over 2.77 lakh streetlights in the city, out of which more than 1.82 lakh are LED lights.

The Chennai Corporation has already prepared a detailed project report (DPR) to implement the system in the entire city and the officials said that tenders would be invited soon.
