Chennai water crisis: Agricultural wells utilized for water extraction

Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani directly reviewed the extraction of water from agricultural wells in Thiruvallur to provide water for the water deficient Chennai.

Tamil Nadu government is taking several measures to resolve water scarcity in the state. In Thiruvallur district, water is extracted from deep wells dug by farmers for agricultural purposes. 

The water well is useful to areas such as Thamaraipakkam, Magaral and Keezhanoor in Thiruvallur district. The farmers have agreed to provide the remaining water for commercial uses for Chennai people.

Through electric motors and giant pipes, the water is brought to Sengundram and Kilpauk water purifying systems for purification, and then allowed for public distribution.

The government has also dug up 13 new giant deep wells in Magaral to extract 15 million litres of water. Minister SP Velumani visited these spots on Tuesday for review and inspection. He advised the officers to have a regular check up for uninterrupted water supply to Chennai.

The Minister also reviewed the ongoing drinking water extraction projects in Retteri, which is said to provide 10 million litres of water.
