The woman has been identified as J Farhath Banu (24) of Semmanchery, from whom the police have recovered Rs 8 lakh. Farhath Banu, who had earlier been employed by the CMRL on contract basis, was in charge of transferring money to their contractors involved in various construction works.
On September 15 last year, she suddenly resigned her job. After this, the CMRL authorities verified the transactions. To their shock, they found out that she had transferred Rs 23.53 lakh to her brother Mohammed Janath’s account. The money was meant to be given to one Kalindee Rail Nirman Engineers Ltd.
PK Parthiban, joint general manager (Finance and accounting) of CMRL Administration office, lodged a complaint with Joint Commissioner (West) M Vijayakumar in April. Subsequently, a case was registered at Koyambedu police station against Farhath Banu in May. When the police launched a hunt for Farhath Banu, they found out that she is living in Semmanchery with her husband. Police secured her for interrogation during which she admitted to the crime. “Farhath Banu is a B Com graduate and worked with CMRL on contract basis. She used the stolen money for her wedding, as her family was not in a position to fund her wedding,” said the investigation officer.
Police recovered Rs 8 lakh from Farhath Banu before she was remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday.
