Loyola sets inclusion in motion, elects transperson to students union

In what could be a first in the State, a transperson was elected as students’ union representative in a city college on Friday.

At the Loyola Students Union (LSU) Election 2019-20 held by the management of the Loyola College (Autonomous) on Friday, Naleena Prasheetha, an MSc Visual Communication second-year student, was elected Associate Secretary.

Naleena, who was the first transgender to complete graduation from Loyola, said that she defeated her the other candidate by 231 votes, which is considered to be the highest margin so far in the college for the particular post.

Speaking to DT Next, Naleena said that she had no plans to contest when the election schedule was announced. “However, during my second semester, I felt that something had to be done for transgenders and decided to jump into the fray,” she said.

The college management stated that the election process started on June 18 and the polls were held on June 21. Among the various nominations received, 17 eligible candidates were allowed to contest the election.

The election was conducted online, in which students of Shift I and II voted. The result was declared by Loyola Election Commission and the same was announced by the Principal on the same day.

The others who were elected to the LSU include Sunku Jishnu (President), Philip Xavier D (Vice president), Pradeep Joel S (General Secretary) and Manimaran G (Joint Secretary).
