In addition to these violations, the vehicle had ‘LOL U Mad’ instead of the registration number on the read number plate, which attracted a fine.
On Friday afternoon, sub-inspector Bhagavathy Perumal tried to intercept a speeding Volkswagon on the service road in Porur. But the person behind the wheel allegedly made an abusive gesture using his finger and sped past him.
But two other police personnel returning home after duty spotted this and stopped the vehicle where the service road meets the by-pass road. An argument erupted between them, and both the police personnel and the driver allegedly hurled abuses against each other.
A mobile phone clip of the incident reached the senior officials, who directed the Porur traffic enforcement police to take action against the offender.
According to the police, while the car is registered in the name of S Senthil Kumar, the person who drove the car is the grandson of former PMK MLA Shanmugam.
When contacted, police said that he was booked for not having the number plate in the rear. Instead of the registration number, it had the words ‘LOL U MAD’. The car also had tinted window panels.
It may be recalled that a car driver in the city was recently booked for using a term abusive of women on the number plate.
