College girl dies as car turns turtle on ECR, 2 friends hurt

A 19-year-old girl died while two others were injured after a car in which they were traveling turned turtle on ECR on Wednesday. The deceased, S Pritha of Choolaimedu, was studying at a private women’s college in Chennai. The injured were her friends, A Ashwini (18) of Villivakkam and Franklin (28) of Velachery, a software professional.

The police said that Pritha, Ashwini, Franklin and two others went to Mahabalipuram on Wednesday morning. When they were returning in the night, Franklin, who was driving, tried to avoid hitting cattle and lost control of the vehicle leading to the accident near Krishnan Karanai village on ECR. The Mahabalipuram police went to the spot and admitted all of them to a private hospital in Kelambakkkam. Pritha was declared dead on arrival while Ashwin and Franklin are undergoing treatment. The two other suffered minor injuries, said the police. The Mahabalipuram police have registered a case.


Woman dies as lorry hits bike at Chitlapakkam

A 47-year-old woman, riding pillion, died after she was hit by a tanker lorry near Chitlapakkam on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Uma of Raja Annamalaipuram. On Thursday, Uma along with her husband Sundaram (50), a carpenter, went to Chitalapakkam to attend a wedding ceremony. After the function was over, Uma and Sundaram were returning home on their two-wheeler. When the vehicle was on Chitlapakkam-Medavakkam Road, a tanker lorry rammed their two-wheeler from behind, said the police. In the impact, Uma suffered grievous injuries and died on the spot. The St Thomas Mount traffic police sent the body for post-mortem examination to the Chromepet Government Hospital. After a search, they arrested the lorry driver.
