Gold worth Rs 20 lakh seized at city airport
Customs officers at the city airport nabbed two persons who were trying to smuggle gold, on Monday.

The Air Intelligence Unit intercepted Naseer Ahmed Shaik (24) from Proddatur in Andhra Pradesh, who arrived here from Riyadh through Kuwait by Kuwait Airways flight. When they examined his checked-in luggage, the officers found nine cut pieces of gold of 24 K purity, weighing 346 grams, with an estimated value of Rs 12.30 lakh.
They were concealed in a hollow portion of a wooden rod among his personal items. In the second case, Nona Shifaya (51) of Sri Lanka, who had arrived from Colombo by Spice Jet flight was stopped at exit. She was found carrying four cut pieces of gold, weighing 232 grams, valued at Rs 8.25 lakh, in the rectum. In all, 578 grams of gold valued at Rs 20.5 lakh was recovered and seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962.
