Highways dept proposes 4 elevated roads in city
The State Highways Department has come out with an ambitious proposal to decongest the city roads with a mix of elevated roads, flyovers and link road.

Replying to the debate on the discussion for the Highways Department in the State assembly on Monday, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that feasibility study and preparation of detailed project reports would be undertaken at a cost of Rs 2.35 crore for the nine projects to reduce congestion in the city.
The Highways Department has proposed to study the feasibility of an elevated road from the Halda junction to Adyar and then from Greenways road to Lighthouse through Santhome High Road. An elevated road will connect Chinnamalai with Velachery Bypass while another will take off at Vadapalani and land at Porur.
Palaniswami added that feasibility report would be prepared for constructing a flyover at Ambattur Telephone Exchange, Basin Bridge junction on Wall Tax Road and Ambedkar College at Vyasarpadi. “A detailed feasibility study report would be prepared on constructing a link road along the Adyar river bank between Maraimalai Adigalar bridge at Saidapet to Thiru Vi Ka bridge,” he said, adding that a detailed project report would be prepared for constructing foot overbridges at DAV School and Vellammal school on Tirumangalam-Mogappair road.
The Chief Minister also announced the construction of a flyover at the junction of Lattice Bridge Road and East Coast Road, widening of ECR road from four-lane into six-lane and Tambaram East bypass road at a cost of Rs 299 crore. Two ‘U’ shaped flyovers would be built at the junction of Rajiv Gandhi Salai near Tidel park at a cost of Rs 110 crore, he said.
Besides, Palaniswami announced the allocation of Rs 1,122 crore for land acquisition for 13 flyovers, two road overbridges, two-foot over bridge and a river bridge within the Chennai Metropolitan Area. “The flyovers would be built at 13 places, including Selaiyur, Korattur, Vadapalani-PT Rajan Salai junction, Madhya Kailash junction and Madipakkam. A high-level bridge would be built at Padikuppam while a skywalk would be built at Tambaram,” he said adding all these projects would be taken up as part of the Chennai City Traffic Decongestion Project with funding from the New Development Bank.
