Man held for kidnap of construction supervisor, hunt on for five more

The Guindy police on Monday arrested a 30-year-old from Mambalam for allegedly kidnapping a construction supervisor at Five-Furlong Road near Guindy and attempting to extort Rs 1 lakh from him.

According to the complainant, Umapathi, who is a resident of Velachery, he was at work in the construction site on Sunday evening when six men barged in, forcibly took him away to an isolated area nearby and assaulted him before demanding Rs 1 lakh from him. The men allegedly ordered Umapathi to pay up if he wanted the construction work to continue.


Meanwhile, labourers at the construction site who witnessed the incident, informed the Guindy police about it. As the police reached the spot, Umapathi’s attackers tried to flee. Five managed to escape while the sixth, identified as Srinivasan, a resident of Mambalam, was nabbed. The police also seized the car in which Umapathi was taken from the construction site. They are now hunting for the five others involved with the incident.
